Afolami Appointed Economic Secretary to the Treasury
New Role for Conservative MP
Bim Afolami, Conservative MP for Hitchin and Harpenden, has been appointed Economic Secretary to the Treasury.
Afolami, a former City banker and father of three young boys, takes on the role after serving as a whip in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. He is the first person of Nigerian descent to hold the position.
Born in Berkshire and educated at Eton and Oxford, Afolami began his career in the finance industry. His grandfather was an Anglican vicar who emigrated to Britain from Nigeria, and his father is a local NHS doctor.
Afolami lives in a village near Harpenden with his wife, Henrietta, and their sons.
